Commonly found on the legs, thread veins or spider veins are tiny red or purple veins beneath the skin. Many people find them embarrassing and unsightly, though luckily they are easily treatable with sclerotherapy, which is the gold standard treatment for thread or spider veins. This safe and non-surgical procedure involves a series of precise injections into the veins using an agent that causes these veins to gradually disappear.
Dr Bawa, as a medical professional, uses sclerotherapy to safely and effectively treat thread veins in his patients. The treatment itself begins with the injection of an agent that causes the walls of the veins to stick together. Because these tiny veins can no longer carry blood, they are gradually broken down and absorbed by the body’s natural recycling system. Sclerotherapy with Dr Bawa is safe, effective, and can help you feel confident in your skin again.

Your Consultation: The most important part of your patient journey is the initial consultation, as it allows us to really understand what your concerns are. Using this insight, we strive to address your concerns and exceed your expectations by helping you to achieve fantastic and permanent thread vein removal.

What is included in the initial consultation?

  • A comprehensive assessment of your requirements and concerns.
  • Thorough medical assessment.
  • Clinical photos to assess before and after treatment (always confidential).
  • Bespoke treatment plan including detailed explanation on how we will achieve your goal.
  • Dedicated time in which we will answer any questions you may have honestly and clearly.

Pre-Treatment: We advise you to refrain from consuming alcohol for 24 hours prior to receiving sclerotherapy treatment, as this can increase the risk of mild bleeding or bruising post-treatment. We also recommend purchasing hosiery prior to the treatment day, and bringing them for the procedure, which will be discussed during your initial consultation.

Appointment: We’ll welcome you to the clinic and your consent will be taken for the treatment. Any questions are welcome throughout and we’ll keep checking that you’re happy as your sclerotherapy treatment progresses. When the treatment is complete, we’ll arrange a follow-up appointment for your second treatment in the course.

Time taken: Sclerotherapy treatment takes between 30 to 45 minutes.

Downtime: You can return to work immediately, though Dr Bawa recommends walking for 10 minutes after treatment. Minor bruising may also occur, though this is natural and resolves after a few days.

After-care: Dr Bawa advises that hosiery must be worn following the procedure continuously for 78 hours, then while not sleeping for the next 2 weeks until review at your follow up appointment. Hot baths, compresses, saunas and steam-rooms, and direct sunlight are avoided for 48 hours after treatment. Staying out of the sun is important for up to 6 weeks following the procedure to avoid any discolouration of the skin. You should also avoid exercising for 24 hours post-treatment. Patients should avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory medications for at least 48 hours after treatment.

How long will it take to work: Results tend to vary between patients. Typically, optimal reduction and even removal is achieved after 2 sessions. The fading process is gradual, and your full results may take up to 3 months to develop, though the results are definitely worth it.

*Individual results may vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does sclerotherapy work?

Sclerotherapy is the injection of a safe medical agent into a thread vein using a very fine needle. These micro-injections cause the vein to swell and their walls to stick together so that blood cannot flow through them. These redundant vessels are then gradually recycled and broken down by the body, reducing them in size until they have virtually disappeared.

Is it painful?

The sensation is likened to a discomfort rather than pain, though the area may feel sensitive and throb slightly after treatment. Most patients find that they don’t need a topical anaesthetic during the procedure as the sensation is tolerable.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects include the treatment area feeling itchy, appearing bruised, or red and raised. These are completely normal and tend to last anywhere between 3-7 days. It’s also normal for the treated vessels to appear darker and harder after the treatment, but this is a sign that the body’s natural processes are happening. Rarely this discoloration can last up to a year, it then usually fades away.

When will I see my results?

This depends on several factors, including the severity and depth of your thread veins, as well as their size and position. Typically, we can improve the appearance of them within a single session, though true disappearance or fading is achieved in a course of treatments. We can discuss your estimated treatment timeline at your initial consultation.

Can anyone have sclerotherapy for thread vein removal?

This treatment isn’t suitable for those who are pregnant or receiving the contraceptive pill. It is also not suitable if you have varicose veins, a previous deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the legs), leg fractures, a local skin infection, heart disease, or diabetes. We can assess your suitability at your initial consultation and talk you through the treatment process.
